About me

Dr Liam Cahill (he/him) · Senior Lecturer in LGBTQ+ Psychology · School of Social Sciences, Nottingham Trent University

I'm a Senior Lecturer in LGBTQ+ Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. My research explores body image and wellbeing within LGBTQ+ communities, particularly among sexual and gender minoritised men, and my teaching centres on quantitative research methods, statistics, and LGBTQ+ psychology.

I completed my BSc in Psychology at NTU in 2019 with first-class honours (receiving the BPS Award), followed by an MSc in Psychological Research Methods with distinction in 2020. My PhD, completed in 2023, examined how situational threats influence men's body shape and size preferences. I've held academic and research positions at NTU since 2020 and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Beyond research and teaching, I lead the LGBTQ+ Health and Well-being Research Group, sit on the departmental EDI committee, and contribute to NTU's Open Research committees. Externally, I'm an editorial board member for Psychology & Sexuality, review for the International Journal of Transgender Health and Sexuality Research and Social Policy, and co-chair the UK regional network of the International Partnership for Queer Youth Resilience (INQYR).

Teaching

I teach across undergraduate and postgraduate modules including Research Methods, undergraduate and postgraduate statistics, Gender, Identity and Body Image, Psychology in Context (LGBTQ+ psychology), and Psychology of the Family (LGBTQ+ families).

Supervision

I supervise undergraduate projects in the LGBTQ+ project lab, and MSc, MRes, PhD and Professional Doctorate candidates on topics spanning LGBTQ+ experiences and mental health. Prospective postgraduate students with ideas in these areas are welcome to get in touch.
