I research body image and wellbeing in sexual and gender minoritised communities, with a focus on populations comparatively neglected by body image research: bisexual men and trans men.
A full, live list of ongoing projects is on my OSF page. Highlights:
Exploring what shapes body image in cisgender bisexual men, including the distinct roles of straight and gay community bi-negativity.
The role of gender congruence, affirming care, body neutrality and functionality appreciation in trans men's wellbeing.
Understanding protective and risk factors in preventing suicide among LGBTQ+ young people in the UK, with the INQYR partnership.
Developing and validating measures including the HIV Anxiety Scale (HAS) and a DoxyPEP acceptability scale (DPAS).
Open research is one of my core philosophies, in both research and teaching. Wherever possible I preregister studies, share materials and data openly, and publish open access. My projects, preregistrations and materials live on the Open Science Framework.
This commitment was recognised with an NTU Open Research Award (2024). I also contribute to the NTU Open Research committee at university and departmental level, and lead the LGBTQ+ Health and Well-being Research Group.
As an early career researcher I'm always open to collaboration on projects related to LGBTQ+ psychology, body image, and health and wellbeing. Current collaborators include colleagues at Nottingham Trent University, the University of Birmingham, and the International Partnership for Queer Youth Resilience (INQYR), where I co-chair the UK regional network.
I also supervise MSc, MRes, PhD and Professional Doctorate candidates on topics across LGBTQ+ experiences and mental health. If you're interested in working together, get in touch.
